War causes a sure lot of pain and suffering. Unfortunately, it’s sometimes necessary for a country to go to war to protect its citizens. Whenever our country goes to war, we send hundreds or thousands of our brave soldiers in harm’s way.
During the war on terror in Afghanistan, Marine Sgt. Craig Grossi was one of the brave soldiers that were sent to Afghanistan. Sgt. Grossi’s unit was constantly attacked by the Taliban soldiers and Al Queda terrorists but they fought bravely to get the job done.
Despite the horrors of war, Sgt. Grossi encountered something wonderful while on patrol to gather intel. Sgt. Grossi came across a gentle dog that was happily wandering around the area that they were patrolling. Sgt. Grossi was a little curious and decided to get a little closer.
When the stray dog saw Sgt. Grossi coming near, it did something unexpected. It wagged its tail. Sgt. Grossi never expected a dog to wag its tail especially if it’s at someone that he never met before.
What Sgt. Grossi didn’t know at that time was that it was the beginning of a special bond between him and the dog. Sgt. Grossi named the dog Fred and whenever he spent time with Fred, Sgt. Grossi would find peace and a sense of being home. When the time came for Sgt. Grossi to come home, he needed help getting Fred back to the US.
Thankfully, a group of DHL workers and a veterinarian helped ship Fred back to the US and be reunited with Sgt. Grossi. When Fred was reunited with Sgt. Grossi, Fred couldn’t be more excited. Fred went crazy and he couldn’t stop licking Sgt. Grossi’s face.
Sgt. Grossi was dealing with traumatic brain injury and PTSD. He was mourning the death of his close friend. Fred came at the perfect time as he helped Sgt. Grossi talk about his experiences during the war, which helped him deal with PTSD.
Sgt. Grossi realized that Fred did more for him than he expected. Here’s a heartwarming video showing how Sgt. Grossi met Fred and how they formed a lasting bond.
